So, after some "re-education" the technicians seem to do their work.
Now I am using the same method to make it possible for military personnel to automatically extinguish all fires of the assigned room.
Their superior (armored) suits completely protect them from damage, whereas all other crewmembers suffer injuries from the heat.

This way, you have to choose either between hiring some soldiers to act as firemen on a civilian ship, or hire at least one medic to heal badly burnt technicians or do nothing, save costs and hope for the best...

great idea ratakari! i like that trade off, it makes it an especially critcal decision when you get into a firefight where you litteraly have to fight fire while fighting off enemy fire :P

this will also be a very difficult choice for the smaller, more mass-produceable ships where attention to detail will be important.

a scenario...

where...

the only crew we had...

WERE ARMED ENGINERS...

that had to take back the ship from a xenomorph invasion...

Will be interesting to see how you make transport ships. Either you hope for the best, add a sickbay and up the cost, or hire a few military troopers to fight fires

You need to add another class of crew: Assistants.

Expendable, cheap, dumb workers.
Send them to fight fires in their jumpsuits, use them as a distraction for Xenos or space them against the enemy ship when you run out of ammo. :P

I'd like to see the ability to terminate and decompress a room to extinguish fires. However I'd make it a ship A.I. setting or something to that effect to be able to automate it. I'd also code it so that you can't use that option if any of your crew were in the room. It should also be noted that as far as the realism goes, most spacecraft these days don't use a pure oxygen atmosphere and that a fire in an air-tight room would burn through the oxygen in that room rather quickly. To add to the difficulty of fires in light of these facts I'd give the fire the ability to spread through the access tubes of the ship also.

as for decompressing rooms to put out fires, I do think it should be controlled by A.I. for larger ships (if we even get it at all XD) since managing a crew of almost triple digits (if not more) would make it almost impossible to keep track of all those rooms you'd need to shut out while keeping your crew safe and surviving an attack or whatever it was that caused the fire XD
