Perhaps an area selector - select 'place armor', then drag-select a rectangle around the front 1/3 of the fuselage to armor the front facing area?

Also, internal armouring is something that would be nice: eg, if you could put some extra internal armor in the front few spaces on a bug, then that would allow it to survive the asteroids quite a bit better, without having to spend on shields.
