one of the main question i try to answer with this post is : is it possible for a (more than) limited crew to fly a ship?

for example: you start with 6 pilots but due to incident, one or more of the pilot dies (or are unable to do their duty) , how many pilot would be needed to run the necessary bridge systems to get back to civilization. (or in other word: how many pilots can die before you reach the point where it's impossible to move the ship anymore.)

in that point of view, i tried to divide the 6 seat the bridge offer into 6 differents duties:

- the helm : the pilot at this seat can steer the ship. (need to be linked to the engine room and thruster rooms)

- detection system : the pilot at this seat can detect object that may lay ahead (the bridge got his own detection system, but could be linked to a more powerful detection system to increase it's detection range. need to be online so the helm can see where he is going and avoid detected danger)

- navigation: the pilot there make sure the ship is still on the good path. (could be linked to a navigation room to allow travel in uncharted area. need to be online to correct the ship path after the ship avoided a detected danger.)

- communication : maintain communication between crew members. (that way if one crew member found something not working properly due to possible malfunction it would tell it to the bridge. for example: "problem at the engine room, we dont get enough fuel." Which is in fact : "problem in one of the fuel tank, but we cant tell which one from here." that kind of alert could be issue some moment before the computer core detect precisely where the malfunction is.)

- ship integrity system : the pilot there oversee the whole ship integrity. (could do the same job from the computer core but with more difficulties. can only check integrity of room that are equiped with some electronics designed to check integrity. he can also trigger a quarantine if the ship is equiped with a quarantine system and either the captain, the computer core or a medic officer give the order or authorize it.)

- the captain seat : the captain take the decision, he also oversee the work of all the other pilots (could be seen as a moral boost and efficiency boost for the system on the bridge with the lowest efficiency. could also be needed for special operation needing the captain's code, as the captain is the highest authority in a ship, action that involve the whole ship may need the captain autorization.)

so this is what i end up with.

the helm, the detection system and the navigation are in my opinion the three main system that need to work to allow space travel.
the "communication system" (ship integrity check from the crew point of view) and the "ship integrity system"(ship integrity check from the "computer core" point of view) are needed for internal use and dont influence space travel capacity of the ship.
the captain position is a bonus.

therefore, only 3 pilot are needed for space travel, yet 6 are needed for optimal efficiency.

explanation:
- without the helm you can't interact with the ship engines an trusters.
- without the detection system you are blind (unless on the old models where you can see the outside through a window.)
- without navigation you may go off track during long travel and be lost in deep space. (with the exception of short travel within the same star system where the destination is already within detection range, in that scenario only the detection system could be needed.)
- without communication the ship can still operate but with some difficulties. (problems found by a crew member could not be communicated to the bridge, and for gameplay, would not be announced to the player on the top of the screen)
- without ship integrity system, the ship can still operate, but the crew would need to patrol the ship to find malfunctions and intruders. (problems found by the computer core could not be communicated to the bridge, and for gameplay, would not be announced to the player on the top of the screen)
- without captain, the ship would have a moral loss but could still reach it's destination if all other systems are operational.

the same can be done with the engine room, but first i would like your idea about the bridge.
