While having the keys 1-5 as hotkeys for deck selection is good for ship design, in crew management - I've found that it's counter intuitive to the creation of crew groups. In traditional RTS style, I propose that crew groups should be selectable via keys 1-9 and that pressing the hotkey while the group is already selected should cause the camera to center on that group.

If not, then I would like, at least, to have some means of quickly selecting and finding groups of crew. As opposed to manually searching for them and dragging a selection box (which has a delayed activation) or shift clicking each crew member.

You can select an already created group by pressing SHIFT + [Number].

I agree, I was lucky enough to stumbled upon the shift+NUM to select the group. Even so I feel like making shift+NUM work for switching decks or changing the method entirely (-and+, <and>) and leaving NUM for crew selection would work better.
