The objective is to dock onto some damaged vessel, send crew to retrieve stranded passengers. Thus the ship design would need to be able to manned by only a few people while other crew members searched the other vessel, it would need emergency quarters and a medic bay to house and care for the passengers, and need to be equipped with a small scouting ship so the crew can board the distressed vessel if the main ship can get close enough.

An added challenge would be to have these rescues in a dangerous location, so that would need to be considered to. So in the midst of a Gravity-esque debris field or in a warzone where you might get boarded while part of the crew is away

I like this idea a lot.

Might be touch for the UI having two ships onscreen though (your rescue craft and the damaged ship) but otherwise the idea of having to board a ship in chaos and get people out sounds awesome.
